Shumba by Jorge Variego is inspired by Osvaldo Pugliese’s La Yumba, reimagined for guitar ensemble. The work translates the characteristic marcato “yum–ba” gesture into plucked articulation, using coordinated attacks, damping, and percussive techniques on the instrument’s body to project a defined rhythmic profile.

Layered ostinati and registral stratification create a composite groove, while subtle metric displacement and dynamic shaping guide the formal process. The ensemble functions as a single rhythmic mechanism.
